The Waterfall Route in San Carlos: What Nobody Tells You

More than a number: "over 60 waterfalls"

That figure shows up in almost everything written about San Carlos, and it is real, but it does not mean there are 60 tourist-ready sites. Many of these falls sit on private land, without marked trails or signage, and are only reachable with a local guide who knows the way. Go in with that expectation adjusted.

How to get there (and why the travel time varies depending on the source)

Buses leave from Medellín's Terminal del Norte. Sources disagree: some say about 3 hours via the reservoirs route (through Marinilla, El Peñol, Guatapé and San Rafael), others say 4 hours and 108 km taking the Medellín-Bogotá highway. Fares run around 28,000-30,000 COP, but confirm before traveling.

Piedra del Tabor

A natural viewpoint over 200 meters tall with 360-degree views. Organized tours from Medellín (with guide, 4x4 transport and insurance included) cost between 55,000 and 60,000 COP per person in a group, or from 170,000 COP for a private pair. It is usually cheaper to hire a guide directly in town.

What few guides mention: the recent history

San Carlos was one of the municipalities hit hardest by Colombia's armed conflict between the 1990s and 2000s. Today tourism is an active part of its economic and social recovery, and every visit -and every local guide you hire- directly supports that rebuilding. It is worth going with that awareness, not just for the photos.

A fact that surprises almost everyone: thanks to its rivers and reservoirs, San Carlos generates around 20% of Colombia's hydroelectric power.

Waterfalls you can visit without a guide

The swimming holes of El Arenal, Guatapé (the pool, not the town) and Bizcocho, near neighboring San Rafael's town center, are the most accessible in the area and are already part of our Waterfall Route.
